A commonly heard phrase from visitors to the Black Hills is, “if we had known there was so much to do and see, we’d have planned to stay longer!”

From the Fourth of July Black Hills Roundup, established in 1918 to raise war funds, to the events held in downtown Rapid City’s Main Street Square, the list of things to do is ever-growing.

Largest is the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and Races, the second week of August. Hundreds of thousands of bikers from all over the world congregate to hang out, compete, tour the hills and enjoy the concerts and general atmosphere. Its winter counterpart is the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo held in February in Rapid City. PRCA rodeos, stock competition, retail vendors and plenty of Western excitement are the hallmarks of the stock show.

Other major annual events include the Crazy Horse Volksmarch, the only time the general public is welcomed at the top of the carving; the internationally attended Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup and Auction; and the Black Hills Powwow.

Smaller, but no less fascinating, are the Black Hills Steam and Gas Threshing Bee, Hill City Quilt Show, and Ellsworth’s Dakota Thunder Air Show—just to name a few. Various car shows, rodeos, fairs, concerts, parades and sporting events are happening throughout the hills. You may want to extend your stay, too!
