Rapid City’s artistic, ever-changing alley has attracted bohemians, artists, and tourists since its beginning in 2005. Located in an alleyway in the heart of downtown Rapid City, Art Alley has become the downtown gallery for urban artists. In the alley near the Hotel Alex Johnson, almost all the buildings are covered in colorfully and creative graffiti art. Many pieces have political, cultural, or pop culture references.
Artists who want to paint here must first contact the owner of the building they want to paint on. Some building owners have opted out and do not allow painting on their buildings. Some building owners have decided to let all contact with artists go through the Rapid City Arts Council. Signage will direct artists who to contact. There is also paperwork to fill out and a valid government ID must be presented. Offensive art and profane language is not permitted.
For some, it is an eyesore; for others, it is art. Whatever your opinion, Art Alley remains a unique attraction for visitors.
Once you’re done touring the alley, get a treat at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, see a movie at Elks Theater, or grab a bite at Paddy O’Neils. All of these destinations are on the same street as the entrance to the alley!
