Westbound from Chamberlain on I-90
As you leave Chamberlain, the landscape begins to change. After crossing the Missouri River, the “West River Country” begins. Farming is rapidly replaced with ranching as the dominant agricultural feature as you head farther west. Small communities that were first created by railroad and homesteading around 1900 are now convenient travel stops along the Interstate. Eastbound from Gillette on I-90
After leaving Gillette, Interstate 90 glides over the plains of Wyoming to just east of Moorcroft. From that area the route begins to enter the northwestern Black Hills region. While on this stretch of Interstate look to the north for occasional glimpses of Devils Tower. You will notice more pine and cedar trees as you approach Sundance. From Sundance east into South Dakota the Interstate follows the northern edge of the Black Hills to Spearfish.
