Snowmobiling in the Black Hills

The Black Hills Snowmobile Trail System is ranked in the top ten among all snowmobile areas, and is consistently recognized in the areas of grooming, signage, maps and services. There are some 350 miles of groomed trails, with most of the Black Hills National Forest open to off-road snowmobiling. Two of America’s top snowmobile magazines have rated the Black Hills as one of the best places to ride in Northern America. Trail maps are available from the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks, or at local snowmobile dealers and tour operators. You must be at least 16 years old to operate a snowmobile.

If you bring your own snowmobiles, remember that all must be licensed. Snowmobiles that are licensed in other states may be used in South Dakota without additional licensing. Those that are not can be temporarily licensed for five days. Permits are available at various Black Hills courthouses, and at snowmobile-oriented businesses in the Northern Hills.
